Have You Seen? {January 27, 2019}

Welcome to Have You Seen? We’ll review last week and share other posts from around the web. Enjoy rest and renewal while you cozy up for some soul-food reading.

Last Week’s Theme: Healthy

A Communal Health Journey + Healthy Rice Bowls by Ashley Felder—”The calendar just turned over a new year, which means copious amounts of news and media stories are focused on getting healthy. Fad diets, gym membership deals, and the latest research hits everyone hard at this time of year. A bonus this year is getting organized, thanks to Netflix. I haven’t actually watched Marie Condo’s show, but all my friends are raving about how organized their t-shirt drawers are.”

Let Your Heart Lead {Book Club} by Sarah Hilkemann—”As we talk about each type, I’ve included the range of health described in The Road Back to You not to add on shame or attack different types. We are each in need of transformation, and this growth can only come with the help of the Holy Spirit. These warning signs can also wake us up to when we might be headed down an unhealthy road. As I’ve learned more about how God created me and the myriad layers of my personality, the Enneagram has been one tool that has helped me see when I am getting stuck.”

Stewarding Yourself During Change by Lily—”I am finding experiencing culture shock is very similar to experiencing grief. One minute I am riding high the waves of cultural adjustment – celebrating productive interaction in another language, running successful errands, building friendships with local friends – and the next minute, I am no longer riding the waves… they are riding me. They wash over me, threatening to knock me off my feet.”

The Pursuit of a Healthier Me + A Prayer for Your Carry-On {The Grove: Healthy} by M’lynn Taylor—”I wish I could name a few fail-proof remedies that have never failed me, but I personally haven’t found anything that magically keeps me healthy. I have to do the hard work of watching what I eat (yikes…so much sugar went down the hatch at Christmas…what was I thinking?) When life gets busy, it’s so easy to switch to auto-pilot, eat whatever is easiest to grab, and drink more coffee. Who has time for vegetables? But, the aftermath of this cold has me getting back to the basics of eating more fresh food (which was easier when I lived overseas, I might add!!!) and hiding the chocolate!”

And Now for Next Week

The theme is….

Genuine. Real. Honest. Authentic.

In the glimmering world of social media and airbrushed beauty, it can be easy to portray only our very best selves. The me that gets attention, or who my organization needs me to be. We can rightly adapt and adjust our routines and words and actions to fit in best with the culture around us, carrying gospel light without the wrapping of customs that might offend or confuse. Even these kingdom intentions can lead to the question: Who am I really?

We can find great freedom as we learn more about who God has created us to be and seek to live authentically, right where we are and in the season we are in. What does it look like to serve and live in your context as fully yourself? How can that be a struggle?

We hope this week will allow space to look carefully at your heart and life. May you be in awe of your uniqueness, the Father’s creative design and the tapestry He weaves as He fits us all together. Share your thoughts at The Grove, through your comments and on Instagram this week with the hashtag #VelvetAshesAuthentic.
