Have You Seen? {May 29, 2016}

Welcome to Have You Seen?  We’ll review last week and share other posts from around the web. Enjoy rest and renewal while you cozy up for some soul-food reading.

Thank You and Welcome to Julia

final-head-shot.jpgThis past semester we’ve had the joy of having Julia Martin serve as an intern for Velvet Ashes, working twenty hours a week. We knew that she was a gift from the day she began, but honestly, we had no idea. She quickly put to use her incredible giftedness with administration. She freed up our leadership team to be able to invest in areas of Velvet Ashes that we had been dreaming of, but never had time to do.

One thing we asked Julia to do was look into what it would take for Velvet Ashes to become our own register 501(c)3 non-profit. We knew it was something we needed to do, but we also knew it is a huge, complex process. We simply asked her to “look into it.” Little did we know she would blaze ahead, researching her heart out, and basically do the process for us. Thanks to Julia, Velvet Ashes was able to form an official board and complete all the paperwork necessary for this massive process. We’re currently waiting for the paperwork to be processed by the state, but we hope to announce in a few months that we are an official non-profit organization. This would not have happened without Julia!

Our leadership team began praying months ago that Julia would consider staying on with Velvet Ashes after her internship completed. We saw how much the Lord was using Julia, and we knew how much we needed her beyond one semester! Because we’re such a young organization, running on a shoestring budget, we knew that would mean Julia would have to raise her own support. And we all know how hard that is, especially if you’re staying stateside.

As Julia interacted with many of you through email communication throughout the retreat, the Father stirred in her heart such a passion for all of you. She decided to make that leap of faith, raise her own support and continue serving with Velvet Ashes. And our leadership team threw our hands up and did a happy dance. This was an incredible answer to prayer.

Please join us in welcoming Julia as a long-term member of the Velvet Ashes team! Thank you, Julia, for throwing your lot in with us. We know you are God’s gift to us, his provision for this ministry. Please join us in asking God to provide for Julia’s financial needs and she makes this leap of faith to serve with us.

Last Week’s Theme: Re-Entry

Diaspora Blues by Danielle Krouch—”I was going on my merry way, enjoying my caramel macchiato and quiet neighborhood, when it happened. I was supposed to be past the hump, right? I mean, I’d been back in the United States for almost two years. Sucker-punch.”

A Bit More About These Chapters {Book Club} by Amy Young—”Today we are discussing chapters 5, 6, and 7. Let’s discuss the content in the comments, here I want to share four thoughts I had or stories I remembered as I reread the chapters.”

Unpacking ALL of the Suitcases by Laura Bowling—”During my ten years with my organization I had a role. I was “overseas worker” Laura. I shared in supporting churches; I sent regular prayer updates; I attended training and conferences. Suddenly there were no prayer updates to send, no reports to fill out, no funds to raise.”

Re-entry in the Cereal Aisle by Renee Aupperlee—”However, re-entry also places you in a unique place unlike any other. It can be a place where the curtains are peeled back and you catch this amazing glimpse of the grand picture God is drawing in your life. So when it’s hard, remember these four things.”

How to Welcome Her Back {The Grove: Re-entry} by Patty Stallings—”Here are 6 ways to welcome her back. Including: Give her space, Be curious, and Extend Grace.”

And Now for Next Week

The theme is . . .

carry on

We come to the third, and final week, in our annual rhythms-of-cross-cultural-work series where we pause as a community and look afresh on these subjects.

So far we have shared about the change we experience and how re-entry is woven into our stories. This week, we will shine the light on those who carry on.

We have good company when it comes to carrying on. Just think of Mary, David, Esther, Ruth, Naomi, Paul, and Barnabas. Just think of Jesus’ final word as he prepared to ascend to heaven.

Bring your stories, thoughts, and images as they relate to carrying on to The Grove beginning Thursday 6pm EST.
