Last Week’s Theme: Happy Birthday, Velvet Ashes!

The Story of How We Became Us by Danielle Wheeler—”As we celebrate our 8th birthday this week, we look back with wonder and awe. God grew this seed of a dream beyond what any of us ever asked or imagined. To each and every one of you who have in the past and present been part of making this place what it is, our team wants to say, ‘Thank you.’ “

Food Memories {Book Club} by Sarah Hilkemann—”I enjoy cooking and do so for myself often since I live alone. But there’s something really beautiful about sharing a meal with someone, isn’t there? It doesn’t seem to matter much if it’s a simple meal of soup and salad or a seven-course feast, but the laughter and conversation shared over food is powerful.”

A Home for Our Hearts by Sarah Hilkemann—”So when you comment on a blog post or on social media, register for the retreat and share your pictures of your space or your journal or the ladies you are retreating with, you give us and each other a gift. You have and continue to open up your lives and that makes Velvet Ashes truly what it is—a home for our hearts”

A Glimpse of What’s to Come by Denise Beck—”We have been hard at work (is it work if you love it?!) here to bring all of this to you in January. We hope that from whatever seat you find yourself sinking into as you read this you know that thousands of miles away, a small team of 3 is praying for you and working on your behalf to help fill you up so you can be poured out wherever you are.”

The theme is…

Adele Ahlberg Calhoun says that to lament is “to take my complaints, anger, sufferings, frustrations and heartaches to God.” (The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook)

And he meets us there.

We realize that following up a whole week celebrating our birthday with the topic of lament might seem strange. But that’s life, isn’t it? Things don’t always flow in predictable patterns. Seasons aren’t always tied up with pretty bows on tidy packages.

Have you written a lament? In those times of carrying your heartache and suffering to God, what has encouraged and sustained you?

We hope the conversations this week will resonate with your heart, no matter what season you are in. Thank you for walking this journey with us!
