Last Week’s Theme: Myth
From Around the Web
And Now for Next Week

This week Americans (and others) around the Globe will celebrate Thanksgiving. Whether you are an American or not, building in the practice of gratitude and seeing how we have been provided for, helps to reorient us in God.
In 1863, President Lincoln was asked to declare a day of Thanksgiving even thought the US was in the midst of a civil war. He started it by saying, “The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.” And then he held space for the hardships people faced by saying, “In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity …” (read the rest here)
The line that stays with me is: these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come.
So constantly enjoyed we are prone to forget.
This week, we will remind each other of the bounties we enjoy. Of how God has provided for us. Of the times God has shown up in the midst of our own personal wars and the times we thought we might be done under by life’s circumstances. How what we have is sufficient. How God is sufficient.
