The Grove Prompt: Aging

This comment threw me (Amy) for a small loop. It was sometime this past spring and I was talking with someone about Velvet Ashes (I know, could I be any more specific?! But I didn’t know I was about to approach a stone of remembrance.).

She said, “Oh, since Velvet Ashes is online you don’t really have a place for older women, then.”

What?!

First of all, she clearly does not get our lives. To stay connected to our home offices, our banks in home countries, and PEOPLE (hello!) it doesn’t matter your age, you live part of your life on line.

Second of all, one of our values is that Velvet Ashes is a place for all women who will live, live, or have lived overseas. All. People in your 20s? We need you. Women in your middle-stages? You are our people. Single? Welcome. Married? Come on in. Have kids, wants kids, happily child free? Your stories enrich our lives.

Women who have been there and done that in life? You hold a special place in the Kingdom of God. The Bible uses words like “honor” and “reverent” for you.

This week, we want to show that honor by exploring both the wisdom you have to offer us, the special place you hold here at Velvet Ashes, and how we can all be women who age not in fear, but in ways that honor God.

Join the discussion this week in the comments, on Instagram using #VelvetAshesAging, and then at The Grove beginning Thursday 6pm EST. Bring your blog posts to link up.

This is good to hear since the mission field can be hard on those of us starting out at advanced ages, especially when most of our family is gone. Agencies can be so eager for young recruits that they can end up being ageist. I’m glad to have just found my way to this community. I hope there are articles about aging far from the familiar. Thanks!
