The Grove Word Prompt: Serving

Welcome!

Are you new to the Velvet Ashes community? Have you just arrived to a new location of service? Picture us holding a big sign with balloons and a list of all you need to know to thrive. This month we are starting a new series to help you settle into fresh rhythms, do some soul-searching about expectations and provide you with an orientation so you can feel even more at home in this space.

First up, serving! We don’t just show up in our new home across oceans and borders and serve like it’s a once and done kind of thing. We are in this for the long haul, giving space for the process of what God wants to awaken in us, all He wants to do through us- and maybe even in spite of us.

What did you think serving would look like? What has it actually looked like for you?

What advice would you give to someone new to a life of ministry?  Especially in their first year?

Pull up a chair, grab a cup of your favorite brew, and let’s chat. Come by each day and comment on the post, and use The Grove to tie everything together and share your own thoughts by linking your blog posts. You can also keep the conversation rolling on Instagram this week with the hashtag #VelvetAshesServing.

I thought serving would be hard, dirty, frustrating, but rewarding work. I didn’t ever picture it like this, though. I sit at my computer for hours each day, checking my coworkers’ Bible lessons in a local language. I check for grammar, spelling, and content. Sometimes it takes all day to edit just one lesson. It’s tedious, straining on the eyes, and sometimes even boring. But it’s so valuable! We want to be sure that what we communicate in these lessons is truth! We want them to be understandable and relatable. We want them to draw people into a relationship with God.
The advice I’d give for someone in their first year serving God? Remember that God is your anchor. He will never leave you or fail you. No one expects you to be perfect. It’s normal to get frustrated and homesick. Sing praise songs to God every day. Trust that God will provide for you. Be intentionally grateful. Love others, but love God even more. Realize that you are doing God’s work, and let Him work through you. Reach out for help – prayer, hugs, just to talk – we need each other.
Above all, know that if you do nothing at all but grow your own relationship with God into a deeper and more meaningful love, God can and will use you. You can be a living example of His living love.
