That moment when you stumble over a new word and what comes out is completely embarrassing. Or when you return to your passport country and can’t figure out how to pump your own fuel or use the currency.
There is so much beauty in crossing cultures and borders, and filling our minds with new languages. But gracious, it can lead to so many awkward moments.
We laugh and move on, but it might also feel painful. Do I fit anywhere anymore?
Whether you are walking through re-entry back to your passport country (or on home assignment), are just beginning to get your feet under you in a new location, or you just have the perfect story from the early days, we would love to hear about your experiences.
How do you wrestle with feeling awkward and the desire to belong when you have been marked by your time living cross-culturally?

I think I’m also seeing a theme in the VA posts: a theme of mid-life and having been here for a long time. That can also include a lot of awkwardness! Mid-life is awkward. And maybe I’m seeing the theme just because that’s where I am, but I still appreciate it. I’m getting a lot out of what I read here. Thank you.
How can I submit an article for consideration on this theme?
