Let’s Delight in the Comments

Sometimes delight shows up in the big, beautiful moments—but often it’s tucked into the small, unexpected corners of our lives. A taste that surprises us, a sound that makes us smile, a little glimpse of God’s goodness right where we are.

This month, we’ve been leaning into the theme of delight, and this week we’d love to hear from you! Let’s fill the comments with introductions and snapshots of joy from our cross-cultural lives. Whether you’re brand new to Velvet Ashes or have been around for years, jump in and share. We can’t wait to laugh, nod along, and discover new delights together.

Here are some questions to get us started! Copy and paste them into the comments, and I’ll give my answers here too. Feel free to share as little or as much as you want. You could even pick just one question to answer. We just would love to hear from you!

  1. Where do you live? (We know some are in sensitive areas, so it’s totally okay to say something more general like “a small town” or “the desert” or a region of the world.)
  2. What’s one little thing in your current culture that delights you—something that always makes you smile (a food, a phrase, a custom, a sight)?
  3. What’s the most delightful or quirky thing you’ve seen at a local market or shop?
  4. Do you have a song that has been on repeat in this season?
  5. What’s the last book you loved? Or, what are you currently reading?
  6. What local snack, fruit, or treat surprised you with delight the first time you tried it?
  7. What’s the most delightful “Yes, this actually works!” moment you’ve had cross-culturally (like finding the perfect substitute for an ingredient or improvising in a creative way)?
  8. What’s one of the first food or drink items you have when you visit your passport country?
  9. What do you enjoy doing on a Saturday morning?
  10. What’s your ideal way to end your day?

Where do you live? I’ve been back in my passport country of the US for seven years (how is that possible?) after living in Cambodia, in Southeast Asia. I make my home among the cornfields of the state of Nebraska.

What’s one little thing in your current culture that delights you? Rolling hills and colorful sunsets. The local library. Dark roast coffee. Auntie life.

What’s the most delightful or quirky thing you’ve seen at a local market or shop? It took me a long time to get used to the freshness of fish in the local Cambodian markets. It always felt like a treat to find familiar items that you didn’t see very often, like celery and strawberries!

Do you have a song that has been on repeat in this season? A new favorite that just came out is called “You are With Me (Psalm 23)” by Ginna Claire Mason.

What’s the last book you loved? Or, what are you currently reading? My favorite book so far this year is Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space by Adam Higginbotham. I’ve discovered narrative nonfiction is one of my favorite genres, but I originally picked this one up because it fit the category “A book connected to the year you were born” for my local library’s winter reading challenge. I’m currently reading potential books for our membership book club—come join us!

What local snack, fruit, or treat surprised you with delight the first time you tried it? Mangoes and sticky rice. It’s still a favorite when I can find it! Also jackfruit and pink pomelo.

What’s the most delightful “Yes, this actually works!” moment you’ve had cross-culturally? I still remember how thrilled I was when I figured out how to make my own barbecue sauce by subbing ingredients and adding a pinch of this and that.

What’s one of the first food or drink items you have when you visit your passport country? I would usually try to get something very seasonal, like a pumpkin spice latte or a drink with peppermint. I haven’t been able to travel back to Asia since returning, but if I could go to Cambodia, I would immediately find a Khmer coffee (with sweetened condensed milk).

What do you enjoy doing on a Saturday morning? It is farmer’s market season, and I love stocking up on local veggies and baked goods, then savoring an extra cup of coffee and a treat.

What’s your ideal way to end your day? I get up early to go to an exercise class, so I try to start winding down so I can get to bed at a decent time. I try to make sure I have time to read before I go to sleep.

Now over to you! I can’t wait to learn more about what delights you in the comments.
