Many years ago, I jumped on the bandwagon and started a small photography business.
It didn’t take long for me (and everyone else) to realize that I did not have a mind for business. Just give me the camera, and let someone else worry about the business side.
One thing I love about photography are the details you notice in the second glance, the ones that renew your excitement because of the depth and meaning those details bring to the photo.
Clickity, click, click, click—Just like with my camera, I use my heart to capture bits and pieces of daily life, details that turn into big moments because of the depth and meaning they bring to my life. I store them in my heart for the hard days and for extra goodness on the happy days.
Moments like:
The laughter from last night, as everyone found their place at the table. Nine college guys filling their plates and teasing each other relentlessly about some funny mishap that happened earlier in the day.
That one short sentence stuffed in between a thousand others that sears itself into my memory for future reference, in case I forget my “why”
The mental picture of seeing one kid hug warm clothes, just out of the dryer, while breathing in their freshness
The sound of her singing when she thinks everyone is asleep
Walking outside surrounded by the swirl of dancing, migrating butterflies
Bits and pieces of daily life, like these, refresh my spirit and bring delight to my soul. You have to look for them on purpose—they might go unnoticed if you don’t pay attention. Just one piece from your day tacked to your heart, saved for later, can make a big difference when your mind is telling you that nothing you are doing matters.
God rejoices in the truth. Moments of delight are tangible reminders that can release truth when the enemy tries to trap our minds with lies. They open the door for the truth to come set us free. The truth brings depth and meaning to our lives. The hard days, the happy days—our life is a gift of grace given to us by the One who delights in us. These bits and pieces of delight lead us to delight fully in God. When we delight fully in God, our love for him, our joy and peace in him—and his kindness, patience, goodness, and faithfulness toward us—all burn deeper into our souls, displayed in our lives through our obedience and faithfulness. As God delights in us and we in him, we are able to see God’s glory. And our true and deepest delight comes from making God known.
What little moments of delight are you holding on to?
