This is Us {The Grove: Welcome to Velvet Ashes}

If you are new around here, welcome! We hope you will find your place in this community of global sisters. Even if you’ve been around awhile, consider this a refresher of all that you can find here!

You might have some questions and we would love to answer them! First, let us introduce ourselves. Our name is Velvet Ashes. This name comes from the velvet ash tree, which can thrive in unlikely and often harsh places like the desert. And really, that is our heart cry for you. We want you to thrive, right where you, as you serve and live and love cross-culturally.

We started almost six years ago and have grown to be a community of diverse women who are united around our need for connection and our love for the Lord. We gather around a different theme each week and hear thoughts from each other through the blog posts. Our week ends with a wrap-up post called Have You Seen?, where you’ll find a reminder of what we talked about through the week, some great finds around the internet, and an introduction to our upcoming theme.

You read this week about a few of the resources and connection points we want to offer you. These include our online retreats where we put together everything you need to get away- whether that’s to your living room with your computer and journal or to a special spot with teammates and friends- and find nourishment for our soul. Wasn’t Joan’s story amazing?

Katelyn shared how Connection Groups have ministered to her heart as she got to know a small group of women who can say “I understand, me too”. Connection Groups meet in the fall and the spring for 8-10 weeks through Facebook, video chats or through email. These online meetings allow groups of 5-7 women to go deeper, discuss the weekly themes and encourage each other. We have another session of Connection Groups coming up soon!

We just started our August read in Book Club this week, called Britt-Marie Was Here. An online book club might sound strange but we have so much fun! Find the Kindle version of the book online or through your library back home, read the section for each week and then discuss it with your fellow book-loving sisters in the comments on our Monday evening (Eastern time)/Tuesday post.

Maybe you need some help as you transition to a new place, or as you prepare to re-enter your passport culture. Maybe you need a book to read or ideas for where to find online coaching or counseling. Our Resource page is just for you, full of helpful links to equip and support you.

We LOVE hearing from you, knowing you and sharing together in the experience of serving cross-culturally. Make sure you are following Velvet Ashes on Instagram and Facebook! Also consider linking up your own blog posts related to our weekly themes on our last post of the week, sharing your processing through poetry or art, or join in the comments at any time!

And now, over to you! What aspect of Velvet Ashes has been meaningful to you? What are you curious about? How can we better equip and encourage you?

We would love to get to know you more as well! Share with us a bit about yourself and help welcome others to the community!
