furlough (fûrˈlō)
n. A leave of absence or vacation, especially one granted to a member of the armed forces.
n. A usually temporary layoff from work. (The American Heritage Dictionary)
We call it different things, but most of us in overseas work have packed up everything or sold our few possessions, stored furniture and purchased plane tickets to travel back to our passport countries for a short time. We are suspended between two worlds, the two places we have called home. It can feel like a whirlwind, a welcomed break or an obligation, a breath of fresh air or something to push through until we get back to our routines.
Are you preparing for furlough this summer? Just finishing up time in your passport country? Whether the word brings excitement or dread to your soul, there’s a place for you here.
