They used to pack in coffins. Sometimes, when this life gets hard, I tell myself this as a “perspective setter”. People who do what we do today used to say goodbye and set their minds in one direction, willingly making a choice that meant they may not ever find true community and family again. But still they went. Not for one or five years, but to the end.
And today I am amazed that not only do I NOT have to pack in a coffin, I can cross the world in one day (give or take airline strikes and whatnot). I can see any family member I want in an instant thanks to Facetime. And where once women like us were limited to the mentoring and friendships that occurred within walking distance of our literal bodies, today Velvet Ashes exists and we can learn from women present and past no matter where they are in the world.
And it gets even better.
It’s an amazing time to be alive.
For years, Velvet Ashes has been dreaming of ways to shrink the space that separates us.
Blogs allow us to realize there are others out there that feel the same way we do and we don’t feel so alone anymore.
We feel seen when online retreats are created just for us and they are so affordable no one is excluded.
Connection groups allow us, not to just read the words, but have conversations with women like us all over the world! And sometimes we shriek with joy when our paths through airports mean we hug in real life and not just on screens.
And the membership site collects all of our experiences together in one place. We can go there for community. We can go there for resources like spiritual formation and book club. We can go there for fun.
And it is mostly great.
Except that it’s a little too far removed from my mind because if I have to get on my computer or log into a website, it is just too much effort to be truly engaged.
But . . . it’s an amazing time to be alive.
